St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica

On Thursday (in the midst of a rainstorm), we visited another major basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls.



In the basilica, the popes appear along the upper edge of the ceiling. Pope Francis' photo is lit up.


There is a beautiful mosaic (with a lot of meaning) in the ceiling:


Paul's tomb (where his body minus the head is buried) is below a marble tombstone in the Basilica's crypt, at (4.5 ft below the altar. The tombstone bears the Latin inscription PAULO APOSTOLO MART ("to Paul the apostle and martyr").

Inside the grill is Paul's tomb.
