In the niches surrounding the central altar and Bernini's baldacchino, you'll find four over-life-size statues were of St. Andrew, St. Veronica, St. Longinus and St. Helena, each associated with one of four relics: St Andrew's skull, the veil used by Veronica to wipe Jesus' face, the lance used by St Longinus to pierce the heart of Jesus on the cross, and the true cross found in Jerusalem by St Helena. Below are those statues.
Beginning on Monday, November 3, 2014, pilgrims from Immaculate Conception parish in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and elsewhere in eastern Iowa are traveling to Rome, Italy for a 10-day Catholic pilgrimage. The pilgrimage is focused primarily on Rome with a day trip to Assisi. We have a full, amazing itinerary ahead of us, and my plan is to document the journey via this blog, depending on available time and Internet access, of course.

St. Peter's Basilica
Let's start with Michelangelo's Pieta.
The incorrupt body of Pope St. John XXIII:
The Holy Door at St Peter's:
The holy water font at St Peter's -- guarded by angels!
St Andrew
St Longinus
St. Helena
St Veronica
And it wouldn't be a visit to St. Peter's without some Swiss Guard shots. Poor guys! All day long people are taking photos of them!
